DATA & SERVICES: 19TH CENTURY WEATHER RESOURCES

Other 19th Century Weather Data Available at MRCC

NOAA’s GHCN-Daily Weather Dataset includes 19th century data from the U.Ss and around the world. Variables found in GHCN-D are: Maximum and Minimum Temperature, Daily Precipitation, and often Snowfall and Snow Depth. Some of these stations overlap with data keyed during the CDMP program.

Early American data can be obtained from the MRCC cli-MATE data portal. The interactive station selector map provides the period of record for each individual station. The station period of record can be obtained for multiple-stations by using the text selector for states or counties. The period of record, however, does not reveal missing periods. For that one must retrieve the station data itself from cli-MATE.

Climatology References

MRCC has collected citations of climatologies of many weather phenomena, and a sampling of historical non-fiction books that are provided on our Climatology References page. Citations for studies related to 19th century weather events and climate trends also are provided. If we have missed some of your favorite climatolgies, books or studies, please let us know.

Climate Data Rescue

NOAA, through the Climate Data Modernization Program (CDMP) and in conjunction with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the International Environmental Data Rescue Organization (IEDRO), and the Atmospheric Circulation Reconstructions over the Earth (ACRE) initiative were instrumental in launching Climate Data Rescue Programs. While CDMP is no longer funded, volunteers at NOAA, IEDRO, ACRE and the WMO continue to search for and rescue historical weather data. The I-DARE portal is an undertaking of the World Meteorological Organization to provide information on climate DAta REscue (DARE) technologies and best practices, on worldwide data rescue activities and links to datasets incorporating 19th century and other rescued weather data.
