Threshold Search Description

The Threshold Search tool allows users to search for data where values are above, below or equal to a certain threshold.  For example, days with precipitation over 2.00 inches, days with low temperatures below 0°F and days with an inch or more of snow depth can all be found using the Threshold Search.

These thresholds can also be limited to specific periods.  For example, days with measurable snowfall between March 1 and November 31, or precipitation greater than 1.00 inch between June 1 and August 31 can be searched.
Thresholds between two variables can also be searched by selecting Two Threshold Criteria.  Examples include days where measurable snowfall occurred when the maximum temperature is greater than 32°F and days where more than 1.50 inches of precipitation fell when mean temperature for the day is above 50°F.

Three output formats are available and are easily toggled between at the top of the table:

  • The Chronological List of Dates option will list all dates where the threshold criteria is met. Example: Days where the maximum temperature was greater than 90°F and more than 2.00 inches of rain fell between June and August.
  • Chronological list of dates

  • Monthly Counts will output a table showing how many days the threshold conditions were met for each month.
  • Example: Counts of days where 0.50 inches or more rain fell.

  • Runs of Days Meeting a Threshold will show certain periods where thresholds were met.  Selecting this output type will create an input box where the minimum days in a run can be selected.
  • Example: Seven day periods between May and August 2012 where no rain fell.
