Heavy Rains in the Southeast

Precipitation totaled more than an inch above normal across Kentucky and along the Ohio River into the boot heel of Missouri (Figure 1). In southeast Missouri and southwest Kentucky, totals topped 5" for the week giving totals that were more than four times normal (Figure 2). Iowa and northern Missouri were generally dry and northern parts of the Midwest picked up several inches snow on the 19th and 20th (Figure 3). Daily precipitation records were set on each day except the 18th and daily snowfall records were set, mostly on the 19th and 20th in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Most of the areas in drought received little rain during the week (Figure 4).
 

Colder Temperatures Moving in from the Northwest

There was a mix of above and below temperatures in the region for the third week of November. Warmer than normal temperatures continued in the southeast with colder temperatures moving into the northwest parts of the region (Figure 5). Daily temperature records followed the same pattern for the week. Temperatures averaged 2°F to 3°F above normal in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky and 3°F to 7°F below normal in Minnesota and northwest Iowa.
 

Large Hail

Thunderstorms on the 20th brought large hail along with the heavy rains in southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, and western Kentucky. The largest hail fell just north of Eddyville, Illinois (Pope County) where 1.75" hail was reported. Additional reports of 1" hail were reported nearby in Illinois, Kentucky, and Missouri (Figure 6).
