Above Normal Temperatures for Most Locations

Average temperatures were 1-4°F above normal this week for most of the Midwest, with only a small area of near or below normal temperatures in the southwest Ohio River Valley (Figure 1). Overnight low temperatures were 1-7°F warmer than normal across the Midwest except in Kentucky which had low temperatures up to 3°F below normal (Figure 2). Maximum temperatures were mixed across the region, with most locations within 2°F of normal (Figure 3).

Wet and Snowy in the North

Precipitation this week ranged from 0.1 – 3.0 inches throughout the Midwest, with the highest totals falling across drought-affected areas in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota (Figure 4). Over 95 daily precipitation records were broken this week, with the most occurring on November 11 affecting Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Missouri. The winter season’s first watches, warnings, and advisories were issued for winter weather conditions in portions Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Snowfall measured 1-5 inches across much of the upper Midwest (Figure 5), with isolated areas totaling 6-12 inches of snowfall across northern Minnesota and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Windy Week

Back-to-back strong low-pressure systems moved across the upper Midwest, bringing wintery weather across the region from November 11-14 and associated gusty winds. During this period, maximum wind speeds were 20-40 mph across the central Midwest (Nov 11-14)(Figures 6, 7, 8, and 9).
