Temperature
The period started with high pressure in the wake of a cold front. Eastern areas were slightly below normal as a result of the cooler temperatures that lingered, generally no more than 3°F above normal (Figure 1). Much of the area from I-65 westward was above normal, and parts of Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri were 6-7°F above normal.
Average minimum temperatures were near normal for most of the mid-section (Figure 2). In Ohio, Michigan, and northern Wisconsin, they were up to 4°F below normal. Meanwhile, minimum temperatures were 3-5°F above normal for western Minnesota.
Average maximum temperatures were above normal for most of the region. They were as much as 10 above normal in western Missouri (Figure 3). Anomalies became lesser heading east, with only northern Ohio coming in at slightly below normal. Green Bay, Wisconsin observed a temperature of 83°F October 11, which was only the 4th time the temperature rose that high that late in the calendar year.
Precipitation
Precipitation was nonexistent for most of the region. There was significant rainfall over southeast Michigan which totaled to over 200 percent of normal (Figure 4). There was also some precipitation in Minnesota’s Arrowhead region.
The lack of precipitation has been no help to drought conditions. Drought expanded in all categories, with over 50 percent of the region in at least D1 moderate drought by the end of the week (Figure 5). Most expansions were made along the I-80 corridor from Iowa eastward into northern Illinois and northern Indiana. Elsewhere, conditions remained unchanged from earlier in the week.
