Midwest Weekly Highlights - November 22-30, 2017

Very Dry

Little to no precipitation fell across most of the Midwest during the last week of November (Figure 1).  Only a few areas in the eastern U.P. of Michigan and extreme southwestern Missouri had more than half an inch.  This resulted in below-normal precipitation for the entire Midwest (Figure 2).  Only a small area of northwestern Minnesota had more than 75 percent the normal amount (Figure 3).  Snowfall was also limited in northern Minnesota and Michigan (Figure 4).  A few areas in the eastern U.P. of Michigan had more than two inches.
 

Warm, Except in Kentucky

Warmer than normal temperatures were common across most of the Midwest in the last week of November (Figure 5).  Western parts of Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri were the warmest spots, where temperatures were 6-9°F above normal.  Some parts of western Minnesota were as warm as 11°F above normal.  Several hundred daily high temperature records were broken in the region (Figure 6).  Many of these occurred during the day of November 24 through the morning of November 25, where maximum temperatures reached the 70s in southern Iowa, western Illinois and Missouri (Figure 7).  Kentucky and southern Ohio were the only areas with near- to below-normal temperatures.  However, eastern Kentucky was only 1-2°F below normal.
