More Rain

For many Midwest locations, heavy rains fell in the second week of September. A large area of southern Iowa, northern Missouri and central Illinois topped 3" for the week (Figure 1). Totals in these locations were more than three times normal with some locations in excess of five times normal (Figure 2). Several pockets of 2+" fell in other parts of the region. Low rainfall amounts, less than 0.25", fell in some locations in the far northwest, southwest, and southeast parts of the region. Streamflows (Figure 3) were very high for much of the Midwest due to the recent rains.
 

Cooler Weather

Temperatures dropped off significantly in the second week of September. Much of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois, along with parts of Missouri, Indiana, and Michigan, were 10° to 12°F below normal (Figure 4). More than 200 record low minimum temperatures were recorded during the week, with most occurring on the 13th or 14th. The first frost or freeze of the season occurred in some northern locations (Figure 5). Severe weather was only reported on two days, the 10th and the 15th (Figure 6). Tornado reports on the 10th came from three northeast Ohio counties (Wayne, Summit, and Portage Counties).
