Midwest Weekly Highlights - January 18-24, 2021


Temperatures Remain Warm

Temperatures across the Midwest remained warm during the week (Figure 1).  Except for an area in southern Wisconsin, eastern Iowa and northern Illinois that was near normal, most of the Midwest was 1-4°F above normal.  A small area in eastern Iowa was below normal.  This area had below-normal minimum temperatures during the week (Figure 2).
 

Dry Conditions Continue

Dry weather continued into the third week of January (Figure 3).  Weekly precipitation remained below one inch in most areas.  The areas with the most precipitation was in the U.P. of Michigan along with southern Kentucky.  While lesser precipitation fell in southern Minnesota, this was well above normal for these areas (Figure 4).  However, most of the southern Midwest was very dry, with most receiving less than a quarter the normal amount. Snowfall in the Upper Midwest led to most of the precipitaiton in those areas (Figure 5). Lake-effect snowfall amounts over five inches were recorded in the U.P. of Michigan. Most of this snowfall fell through the mornings of January 22 (Figure 6), January 23 (Figure 7) and January 24 (Figure 8).
