Midwest Weekly Highlights - December 1-10, 2019

Slightly Warmer

Temperatures were slightly above normal across most of the Midwest during the period (Figure 1).  Areas of northern Missouri, eastern Iowa, northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin and central Kentucky were 3-5°F above normal, while Indiana, Ohio, southern Lower Michigan and most of Missouri were 1-2°F above normal.  Only a few areas in northern Minnesota and northern Michigan were slightly below normal.  This was partly due to snowpack in these areas (Figure 2).

Snowy in the Upper Midwest

A system on December 1 led to heavy snowfall across the Upper Midwest (Figure 3) and heavy precipitation in Kentucky (Figure 4).  This was part of a larger storm system that disrupted travel across the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.  Snowfall amounts over 10 inches were common from northern Minnesota through northern Wisconsin and the U.P. of Michigan for the full period (Figure 5).  Isolated amounts over two feet were also recorded.  Limited precipitation fell across the region during the rest of the period (Figure 6).  This led to less than half the normal amount to fall in Missouri, western Illinois and southern Iowa (Figure 7).
