Midwest Weekly Highlights - June 24-30, 2019

Summer Warmth Arrives

Temperatures were above normal across a large portion of the Midwest during the last week of June (Figure 1).  Average temperatures were 2-5°F above normal across most of northern Illinois, northern Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.  Maximum temperatures in the upper-80s were widespread across the entire southern Midwest (Figure 2).  Temperatures in the 90s were fairly common on June 29 (Figure 3) and June 30 (Figure 4).  Several dozen daily high temperature records were broken (Figure 5), mostly from minimum temperatures.

Rain Shifts North

After the southern Midwest received plentiful rainfall in the previous week, heavy rain shifted north to the Upper Midwest (Figure 6).  Amounts of over an inch were common across Wisconsin and Minnesota, with heavier amounts of over 3 inches in northern Minnesota.  This was more than twice the normal amount in many of these areas (Figure 7).  A large portion of this rainfall fell through the mornings of June 24 (Figure 8), June 28 (Figure 9) and June 30 (Figure 10).   More than 70 daily precipitation records were broken (Figure 11).

More Severe Winds

More than 500 reports of severe thunderstorm winds were scattered across the Midwest during the week (Figure 12).  Many of these were concentrated across eastern Iowa, southern Wisconsin, northern Illinois and the Ohio River Valley.  Most of these reports occurred on June 24 (Figure 13), June 27 (Figure 14) and June 30 (Figure 15).  A fatality was reported near Peoria, IL (Peoria County) on June 30 from a large tree branch striking a man.  Two people were also injured in Dubuque, IA (Dubuque County) as a mobile home was destroyed from a wind gust of 76 mph.  A 78 mph wind gust was also reported near North Redwood, MN (Redwood County) on June 30.  Hail reports were also fairly common across Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois.  A 2.75 inch diameter hailstone was reported near Remer, MN (Cass County) on June 30.  Three EF-1 tornadoes were also reported on June 24 in Ohio near Adams Mills (Muskingum County), Smoky Corners (Adams County) and Piketon (Pike County).

Flooding Remains in Southern Midwest

While flood waters have receded across the region in recent weeks, moderate flooding remained along portions of the Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri rivers (Figure 16).  The Illinois River at Hardin (Figure 17, Calhoun County) also remained in major flood stage.  Minor flooding was also observed across many rivers in the southern Midwest.
