Winter Warmth

Temperatures were above normal across most of the Midwest during the period (Figure 1). Areas in Minnesota reached 8°F above normal for the period, while most of Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri and Illinois were 2-5°F above normal. The Ohio River Valley was the only area near normal for the period, with spotty areas in Kentucky slightly below normal for the period.
 

Mostly Dry

The Midwest had limited precipitation during the period (Figure 2), with most areas outside the Ohio River Valley receiving less than half an inch. Storms in eastern Kentucky and eastern Ohio led to amounts over half an inch, but this was still only near normal for the period (Figure 3). Most of Iowa, southern Wisconsin, western Illinois, southern Minnesota and Missouri had little to no precipitation. Moderate snowfall amounts were observed, however, in the Great Lakes and some areas of Illinois and Indiana (Figure 4). Amounts up to 6 inches were measured in northeastern Ohio and northern Minnesota.
